Jeff Grosso for Vans "Legends" Pack

Just over a month ago, we got a look at a Jeff Grosso-designed pack of mixture of Vans silhouettes featuring a handful of classic silhouettes with minor performance modifications for skating. Thankfully, the whole collection is now landing at retailers. The Sk8-Hi Vert Pro, Sk8-Mid Vert Pro and Era Pro all wear buttery deep red suede and black canvas on their respective uppers and the Sk8 variants feature white contrast stitching. Toe reinforcement and a collar trim also make them more flexible. All three rely on white vulcanized soles and are available now at select retailers, including Primitive.

Gourmet Quattro Skate Red/White

After seeing the Grey/White makeup, Gourmet gives us another colorway to kick-push in. The Gourmet Quattro Skate Red/White uses the same materials and blocking as the grey version with red in place. Branding is apparent on the upper and tongue with a modest white midsole finishing them off. More dressy and refined than your standard skate sneaker, these are available now at Concepts.

Bowerman Family Recovers Original Nike Waffle Iron

Bowerman Family Recovers Original Nike Waffle Iron

For decades, the Bowerman family had been pestered. “Where is the waffle iron?” curious letter writers and Nike campus visitors would ask. There was no answer, as Barbara Bowerman was sure she had thrown out the breakfast maker that launched an athletic empire years before. A little pre-construction cleaning later though, the catalyst for Nike’s success appeared in a buried cardboard box.

Melissa Bowerman’s (Bill’s daughter) brother-in-law recently unearthed the original waffle iron, as well as some original Nike shoes, in a box that had been buried on the family farm. Though he wanted to throw the vintage goods away, Melissa knew just what those items were and their significance. For those unaware, the sneaker that revolutionized Bowerman and Phil Knight’s business was 1974′s Waffle Trainer, which we know today as the Waffle Racer. Bowerman had been looking for a lightweight sole design that would be efficient on University of Oregon’s new artificial surface track, as well as other running surfaces. A moment of brilliance came in 1971 when he realized that a waffle iron’s imprint, when reversed, would provide great traction on the underside of a shoe. After three years of tinkering, Nike’s revolutionary track shoe was born and an empire began. Unfortunately, that tinkering also led to Bowerman gluing the waffle plates together and disposing of them.

Last week marked Bill Bowerman’s 100th birthday, which Nike executives and Historian Scott Reames felt would be a great time to reveal the discovery to Nike employees. If you’re wondering what it took for Nike to acquire the artifact, Melissa was tight-lipped but revealed that a “generous sum” was given to build a much-needed pole-vault pit for the track team at Condon-Wheeler High School (Bill Bowerman’s alma mater).

And you thought your collection contained rarities.

Nike Air Max 90 “Grinchfrared” Custom

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 09:09 AM PST

Nike Air Max 90 "Grinchfrared" Custom

Last week, we showed you one of the better custom design we have seen in the form of the “Bordeaux” Air Jordan 6. If designed correctly, custom designs can be very intriguing to say the least. This week, we take an in-depth look at the design process and finished product of the custom Nike Air Max 90 “Grinchfrared”. Our homie Jake Danklefs decided to incorporate a Kobe VI “Grinch” theme to the iconic “Infrared” Nike Air Max 90. As seen in the photos below, Danklefs applied a scaly, snakeskin-like element on the side panels and toe area. In addition, a lime green paint shade was added to the mesh-laced toe box, collar and nylon tongue. What are your thoughts on this unique combination of sought-after sneakers? If the Nike Air Max 90 “Grinchfrared” was an actual creation from Nike, would you purchase? Check out a full, photo recap of the Nike Air Max 90 “Grinchfrared” Custom design process.
