Posted: 26 May 2011 01:28 PM PDT Maybach Music owned the internet this week, would they own CSS? While Wale gets the headliner credit, it's some other friends with Miami ties that get the feature spots. Tunechi played his part, rocking throwback SBs, Vans, and Nike Frees on the beach. The boys from Jersey Shore were also in action as Captain Ron brought more sneakers than sun block for his trip to Italy. Skateboard P, Joey Crack, and Game rounded it out wearing retro Jordans seldom seen this week. Which headliner rocked the best kicks? Let us know by voting in our CSS poll. With the Air Jordan 2.0 White/Black-Varsity Red scheduled to drop this weekend, hype is slowly building around these updated classics. Today, another colorway of the Air Jordan 2.0 has surfaced. Faux snakeskin, suede and tumbled leather are fused for a premium one-of-a-kind look, while red and green accents on the lace eyelets, midsole piping, tongue liner, and branding provide a “Gucci” like effect. 1 on 1 with Detroit Rapper Calcei Posted: 26 May 2011 11:18 AM PDT “There has been so many artists that blew up from sneakers. If you look at album covers from the 80s and even today, you will see so many artists that can almost make or break a sneaker.” – Calcei Hip hop and sneakers will forever be tied together and rightfully so. We have witnessed a ton of instances where sneakers have been intertwined with hip hop whether it be through lyrics, album covers or collaborative efforts. Detroit rapper Calcei understands the correlation between the two and has no shame in revealing his fetish for sneakers. The rapper/sneakerhead recently released an entire EP dedicated to sneakers called Laces In, Tongue Out. We discussed multiple aspects of the EP, along with other topics, such as the Detroit hip hop/sneaker scene, his childhood experiences, his infatuation with the Fab Five and many other things. View our in-depth, 1-on-1 interview with Detroit Rapper Calcei below. Detroit rapper Calcei showing some of his collection Nice Kicks: What is the significance of your EP title, “Laces In, Tongue Out”, and what does your stage name, Calcei mean? Calcei: That’s just the way I like to wear my sneakers. I just thought it would be a dope title. To me, it sounds very Tribe Called Quest-like. Oh, and Calcei is the Latin word for shoes. Nice Kicks: What inspired you to make an entire EP dedicated to sneakers? Calcei: Well, I’ve been a sneakerhead ever since middle school. I’m a little bit older than some of these cats out here now though. When the Air Jordan 3s and Air Jordan 5s were coming out, I really started to get into shoes. So, I’ve always been into it and not just Jordans. I really liked the Puma Suedes with the fat laces and the adidas shell toes. Likewise, I was always around music because my friends were into it. Then, I actually got out of the scene and started teaching, until I ran into a guy I used to know back in the day. He started to coming into my classes. We started making music, and I just thought it would be dope to make an EP dedicated to sneakers. My friends wanted to steal the idea, but I told them I was going to do it. I wrote the first five tracks around Christmas time in 2009, and I started recording them in February of 2010. Nice Kicks: What are some of the most memorable sneaker related songs/lyrics that have impacted your passion for rapping? Calcei: Well, without a doubt My adidas. I think that’s the track that kind of started it all for me. That’s the song. As far as lyrics, my favorite sneaker related lyric is, “I’m a Nike head, I wear chains that excites the Feds.” That’s Nas (Halftime song). I just wanted to have fun with this EP, and just be me. I’m not trying to be anybody in my music. I just wanted to be me. I think sneakers are a fun thing. I think hip hop needs to get back to being fun too. A part of Calcei's sneaker collection Nice Kicks: How strong is the correlation between sneakers and hip hop in your opinion? Calcei: I don’t think you can have one without the other. There has been so many artists that blew up from sneakers. If you look at album covers from the 80s and even today, you will see so many artists that can almost make or break a sneaker. I almost think that the sixth element of hip hop should be sneakers. When i see Puma Suedes, I think of hip hop. When I see fat laces, I think of hip hop. When I see shell toes, I think of hip hop. It’s just a direct correlation.
Detroit rapper Calcei showing his collection Nice Kicks: Okay, let’s get into the songs you have on this EP now. On your song Butter, you talk about shoes that cause people to turn their heads and stutter when you have them on. What shoes do you own that are considered neckbreakers? Calcei: When I say ‘Butter’, I wanted it to mean ‘you being you’ as it should be. Don’t follow the trends. Instead, just wear what you wear. The “Infrared” Nike Air Max 90 is the shoe I wear that turns the most heads. I think those always get attention. I think that is one of the best and most classic sneakers of all time. I’ve been at the gas station and a kid has came up to me and said, “Yo, I’m going to steal those.” Also, the “True Blue” Air Jordan 3 is a head-turner for me too. People comment on those a lot. I have the Bobbito “Mac and Cheese” Air Force 1s, and people really dig those. Nice Kicks: You mention the “Infrared” Nike Air Max 90 more than any shoe on the EP. Is that your favorite shoe ever? Calcei: Yeah, I have a whole song about those shoes. But, that’s not actually my favorite. My favorite is the New Balance 1500. I love the mesh and all of the other materials that make the shoe. Plus, it’s hard to get those. You can’t really find them in the US. You have to do the European thing to get some 1500s. I just think the “Infrared” Nike Air Max 90 is classic though. It’s not my favorite, but it’s definitely up there. Nice Kicks: You named Solebox, Nike SB, Saucony, DQM and a number of others on your song Collabo With Me with Beretta Love. What is your favorite collaboration of all time? Calcei: That’s tough. My favorite collaboration would have to be the Solebox x New Balance 1500. I think Solebox does the best collaborations. I also like colette x NB 1500s. I think they did a good job with those. The Bodega x Saucony Shadow 5000s are pretty nice as well. Definitely, the Solebox x New Balance 1500s though. Posted: 26 May 2011 10:58 AM PDT 15 years ago, a talented group of teens and twenty-somethings entered, and were selected in, the NBA Draft. A deep roster, many caught fire while others flamed out. One of the players, whom you may have heard of, is a guy named Kobe Bryant. In honor of his 1996 13th overall selection, Nike has whipped up this Zoom Kobe VI "Draft Day." Dressed in Charlotte's colors, this shoe continually rubs the Vlade-Kobe trade in the face of the Hornets management. Nevertheless, others can enjoy it starting now at Nike Store.
