Posted: 05 Aug 2011 01:17 PM PDT "It's flattering that the Converse Pro Leather shoe, one that has preceded so many other signature shoes, is so widely recognized as the 'Dr. J'. I have so many memories wearing this shoe and am honored that it has stood the test of time and continues to live on," – Julius Erving. Today, Converse First String re-released the timeless, iconic Dr. J Pro Leather in its original, White/Navy color scheme. To coincide with this release, we pulled out one of the jewels from our vault, a Converse First String Dr. J Pro Leather autographed by Dr. Julius Erving himself. The Converse First String Dr. J Pro Leather made its debut in 1976 and features a rich, buttery soft white leather on the majority of its upper. Navy hints, such as the Chevron logo, the heel tab and the inner lining, provide nice contrast. Converse released only 168 pairs today, for $90 apiece. Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:35 PM PDT Eric Elms is the latest artist to have a go at a Vans silo, opting to work on one of his favorites, the OTW Bedford. Elms is an NYC-based artist and art book publisher and for this project, he opted to use a natural color palette of brown and gum. No release date has been scheduled just yet, but expect it to land in stores soon. © Alex Kroviak for NiceKicks.com, 2011. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
Dunked On: 15 Footwear and Facial Combinations of the 2000s Posted: 05 Aug 2011 12:27 PM PDT Today, Nike Basketball released Blake Griffin’s Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011 “10.0″ PE, a sneaker that quickly sold out earlier this morning. Griffin’s Hyperdunk 2011 PE was just one of the many moments we saw from him this past season; just ask Timofey Mozgov. We have witnessed a ton of memorable facial dunks over the years from the likes of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and many more; however, do you remember the footwear worn during these nasty facials? Our Nice Kicks staff compiled a list of the top footwear and facial combination during the 2000s. In this feature, you will see Kobe Bryant doing a whirling dervish in his Air Jordan 8 PEs, Chris Paul serving a facial on Dwight Howard in his Air Jordan 5 PEs and many more moments. Take a look at our Dunked On: 15 Footwear and Facial Combinations of the 2000s. adidas Superstar LTO Black/Black-White Vapour Posted: 05 Aug 2011 11:58 AM PDT Looking for a pair of kicks to rock year-round? Well your in luck. The adidas Superstar LTO is back in a colorway that is sure to look great in any situation, even with a little mud and dirt rubbed on. This version of the iconic Superstar silhouette features an all black leather upper that is complimented with a clean white midsole as well as brass styled lace eyelets. As for the main attraction, it would have to be the large perforations found on the side panel, a detail that gives this pair a degree of flair. This pair is already available at select adidas retailers. adidas Superstar LTO Source: Titolo © Albert Lin for NiceKicks.com, 2011. | Permalink | One comment | Add to del.icio.us |
This Day in Sneaker History: Mars Blackmon is Born Posted: 05 Aug 2011 10:58 AM PDT Spike Lee started it all. While his film career and entrepreneurial ventures deserve an essay themselves, today we focus on his contributions to the sneaker culture. On August 8th, 1986 Lee's breakthrough film She's Gotta Have It hit the big screen. The film may have launched Spike's career in the director’s chair but it also launched one of his most memorable characters on camera. Mars Blackmon, a loudmouthed, high energy sports fanatic would steal the show and eventually catch the eye of Nike. Mars would go onto star in ad campaigns for the Air Jordan 3, 4, 5, 6, 18 and XX. 25 years later, Mars Blackmon is still a staple in pop culture and the sneaker world. His trademark look is still mimicked by fans and his ad presence has inspired many after him (Lil' Penny, Thirst, even that Melo spot with Tommy Davidson). Spike became the first icon in the basketball and sneaker realm to make a splash without making a shot. Ironically enough, Nola's dump has inspired many pickups for years to come. Nike LeBron 8 V2 Low “Miami Night” New Photos Posted: 05 Aug 2011 10:28 AM PDT The Jordan Fly Wade “South Beach” released a couple of weeks ago; yet, that will not be the last Miami inspired sneaker release of the year. Many are still anticipating the release of the Nike LeBron 8 V2 Low “Miami Night”, a shoe that surfaced on the web earlier this summer. It possesses an all-over, speckled design with a red and turquoise and color scheme. Black and white hints provide nice contrast throughout the upper, while a red Air Max cushioning completes its makeup. Is this the best Nike LeBron 8 V2 Low colorway to date?
